One’s Defining Moment

If you have a life that is uninspired and without direction, there’s no amount of money that can make you happy. How many of us just in the U.S. goes through this predicament, day in day out, do you think?

On the level, is America a happy nation, still considered the greatest country on the planet? Or is appearance deceiving. Can we equate wealth with internal satisfaction? For example, is owning a high-def, state-of-the-art fifty-inch flat panel television partly translates into a life that we’re all searching for? Or perhaps having children who have successful careers. Or driving an upscale brand of automobile fulfills a void in someone’s life?

What about the underserved in this great country of ours? Where do they stand by way of happiness and fulfillment? Does relative comfort in their lives by way of some government aid and even a chance to go to those casinos from time to time serves a purpose compared to the rest of society?

Across the socio-economic spectrum, there’s only one thing missing if your life is not where it’s supposed to be, and that is known as focus. There’s got to be something that is central in anyone’s life that can serve as his or her defining moment of happiness and satisfaction. Does anybody think that we do understand our existence?

Unconstitutional?

So now the U S Supreme Court justices are muttering- can the federal government compel everyone to buy health insurance? Some of them clearly are thinking this could be unconstitutional! [see the various reports on last week's marathon arguments over Obamacare at the Supreme Court]

It seems like we can no longer find people with sufficient moral fiber in our midst to tell us right from wrong nor are there people intelligent enough anymore to warn us what works or does not work in our ultra technologized society.

That word- constitutional undoubtedly is a useful guiding principle, but certainly there are exceptions. Do we fail to recognize that in the case of healthcare vis-à-vis chronic diseases, especially in the U.S. where practically everyone is diet-irresponsible, [even some of the justices are fat] pooling the money from all would have a more potent cost lowering effect than if there’s only partial funding from a segment of the population? That is the very foundation of insurance, the bigger the pool of resources to pay claims the lower the resulting cost [premium] for everyone, and needless to say, the less sicker we are as a “corporate-nation”, the cheaper our operating costs would be. So are we now saying that the highest court of the land lacks the faculty for juxtaposition?

Those justices are comparing healthcare with cellphones, i.e. if the U.S. Congress can make everyone buy health insurance coverage, does that mean that it can someday also require everybody perhaps to have mobile phones from which to make 911 phone calls? Just listen to the sound of that silly & stupid argument! Imagine- cellphones versus health care insurance? Can you see how infantile that is, especially coming from justices of the U.S. Supreme Court?

I thought the common good of the citizenry prevails & overrides any written rule. In other words the common good of the people preempts any other tenet. I am sure of it because they do teach that very principle in schools! Therefore if the U.S. ever thinks of someday becoming solvent again, arguably in a millennium, we must contain healthcare costs now, not tomorrow [or we all can stop eating like pigs]. It’s been widely reported in the media that every turn in fiscal policy discussions, runaway healthcare costs are always on the forefront. I am aware of the oppositions’ objections, but that’s because they are selfish and arrogant and still think that the U.S. is living in the golden age of the late 1900s. We are in the tail end of going through very limited supplies and dwindling resources on planet Earth, yet those boneheads [the so-called conservatives] cannot see straight in broad daylight. How about a little bit of sharing and compassion… we’re talking minuscule here and would not hurt anyone, and we all know that!

So what now? (again)

Gasoline back to four-five USD per gallon, deeper austerity measures & hundreds of billions of euro bailout funds for the ongoing EU debt crisis not inspiring much confidence around world, the nonstop bloodshed & even “cleansing” induced by ruthless dictators in the middle east, stupid blunders with in-your-face insults between world religions causing provoked murders of US, allied troops in Afghanistan, bolder bloody attempts revived by terrorists in our backyards like the foiled disaster in New York just recently, Israel & Iran threatening to annihilate one another, and thus probably triggering the beginning of the biblical apocalypse of nuclear war, and so what do we look forward to now? Perhaps the wimpy uptick in the US economy, hopefully will not be devastated by a conflagration of the volatile winds of the eurozone sovereign debt crisis. Alternative, renewable sources of energy? The technology is already here & functional but don’t forget this is a free enterprise zone we all live in! No enterprising company on earth nowadays is simply satisfied with a few hundred million dollar profit; they want the world and then some, so the massive generators of wealth still rule, like the oil producers of the world, the few super elites on the planet who continually conspire to monopolize everything from fuel to medicine to food source to gain a never ending control of humanity.

The real hope for humanity at this point  like it or not is a complete turn around in our ways especially on how humans consume things on this fragile planet of ours.

Sweet Spot for the November 2012 election

Would you now think or at least suspect that Obama would be re-elected this coming November?

With the GOP ongoing selection process of who would be their presidential contender, it appears that the two front runners, Romney & Gingrich are on the opposite side of the fence on how to mend this country, and worse, they are now increasingly sounding and appearing to be no less vulnerable than the president on their top agenda, the economy and employment.

With the improving poll position of the president, it would be mighty hard for the GOP presidential candidate whoever that maybe to convince the voting public majority even now let alone in November that they the Republicans have a much better solution to the current economic woes of the U.S. and the EU.

In simple terms, I am now betting that Mr Obama would be a two-term president. I would not have come close to this sentiment six months ago.

Are Europeans as naïve as Americans?

The top headline of the week in the world of global finance which is the Sarkozy-Merkel proposal and ultimatum of limiting EuroZone countries’ deficit to three-percent of GDP in the hopes of averting the impending meltdown is as viable as the U.S. government’s wishful thinking of resolving its massive runaway deficit in the next decade or two. This is my initial reaction when I first learned about this piece in the news media.

This is as preposterous as what they say about the meaningful cost containment of the U.S. healthcare system within a decade. Pundits in healthcare have stated that ninety-percent of all medical care in the United States is considered unnecessary, and the culprit is none other than the pervasively irresponsible attitudes of the majority toward food.

Unless and until contemporary society sheds its unwieldy mindset, monetary systems and fiscal policies of developed nations are just as good as museum pieces. As what’s being discussed in scholarly circles these days on the subject of psychology and brain science as being inseparable, the biggest   barrier confronting twenty-first century decision makers (which is all of us) no matter how silly and ridiculous it may seem goes to the very heart of the human condition, its inability to consciously focus on the real issues. Let’s just say just for the sake of the argument that present day humans are intelligent enough (not functionally stupid) to tackle the big picture, the underlying mechanism that’s really at work is the inability of people to reconcile what’s necessary and what’s here and now. For instance, we are no longer left with any choices therefore we now must act decisively yet we stubbornly persist both in our thought processes and in our existing ways that solutions do exist, still. Must we not recognize the handwritings on the wall that we are at a dead end in our civilization rather than at another fork on the road?

Let’s just assume for a moment that we are capable as great nations (in the west) to act in our best interest thus start thinking about how we can best preserve humanity albeit less comfortably and live more modestly, are we still to believe that we simply cannot innovate therefore lacking the capacity to reinvent life on earth to be more in tandem with the less fortunate segments of global societies? The popular notion must no longer be nationalism and territorial pride but the continuity of humanity on this earth because whether we can grasp it or not we are about to self-destruct as species on this fragile planet. In other words we are our own worst enemy and are doomed to fail  regardless of the intended & unintended consequences we are all hoping for. It is called the human condition, folks.

We are looking for a few good men & women!

The California Budget of FY 2011-12

It was finally passed in the first half of CY-2011 after some make-believe wrangling, but was the process staged or was it genuinely real and spontaneous? Governor Brown and his cohorts in the state legislature at first gave the public impression that these two government entities were not in sync on the first round of the budget proposal, the governor rejecting the initial state budget proposal by his own democrat-controlled legislature, then after some brief [not even a month] “back-and-forth” he signed the supposedly revised budget version [a compromise, perhaps] that was re-presented by the legislature. Was the tweaking done just for show, a political grandstanding so the current democrat-controlled state  government in Sacramento will give the appearance of true “balancing act governance”?

Have we forgotten about the rancorous periods pre-2011 when the act of passing the annual state budget always came to endless, grinding stalemates between a republican governor and the predominantly democrat legislature? Year after year it took these two branches of government months, if not seemingly forever, seriously & consistently missing congressional-mandated deadlines to resolve, with predictably untenable outcomes, the state budget.

Were those in 2011 all unplanned, unscripted acts of governing, or were they just silly theatrics? Are these people for real? Or it was just an act. Could those be just another ploy by corrupt, career-oriented, self-aggrandizing politicians in our midst? Did most Californians fall for it? Again?

Afghanistan then and now and for generations to come

On a country like Afghanistan, Petraeus and Obama and the rest of the political and military elite simply don’t get it! It’s like an Arab will always be an Arab, and a Viking will always be a Viking. And a dolphin will always be a dolphin, often exhibiting a friendly appearance and seemingly playful attitude while a tiger will always be a tiger and it will eat you alive every time it has a chance! And so is Afghanistan; they will always be Afghanis, and they will always interface with their adversaries no matter how, but at the end of the day as they say, they will not yield on inch on who and what they are, then and now and until hell freezes over. So we might as well kiss our mission over there good bye and cut our losses!

These boneheads who are supposedly our leaders are excruciatingly devoid of all horse sense. Let’s just end our present involvement in Afghanistan right now and pull all the U.S. troops out of there. Let us focus and fortify our efforts instead on preventing terrorist attacks within our own borders and extend that zone to include around a few thousand miles beyond. There is no way even for the great U.S. of A. to nation-rebuild a country like Afghanistan; like they say, just go through their history in the last millennia.

Similarly, there is no way on earth we in the U.S. can avert the impending catastrophic fiscal wipeout due to the skyrocketing health care costs. In a fiscally robust society, full access by everybody to universal medical care would be a prudent policy, but given the current situation of our ongoing dwindling government revenues and rising budget deficits and health insurance premiums going through the roof plus the distressingly worsening, high percentage of fat-obese citizenry that continues to overtax the U.S. medical care system & the U.S. economy, the only way we the people and our government can derail this runaway fiscal-doomsday train is to face the music now and impose radical measures with strict controls on the costs of healthcare. Let us do this—implement a “fat deductible” throughout the country like they have instituted in Alabama with their state employees. They are required to pay a much higher dollar deductible and co-pay to get medical care if an employee exceeds a certain body mass index (BMI) threshold. And on a countrywide basis we need to implement this type of strict control across the board on private insurance as well as on medicare/medicaid. This will serve as a negative reinforcement against the lack of personal responsibility among those who constantly overeat and are abusive to their body and health. Let’s do it on a tough love basis, no exceptions, and if people expire, so be it. The choice before us is quite clear. We’ll be bankrupt and we become extinct as a people or we adhere to and maintain what makes sense fiscally and economically and hope that we can continue to perpetuate. Or we can all continue to pat ourselves on the back and keep on denying our own massively disgusting “fat/chronic disease-certain problems” until we are a second rate nation-power because we simply ran out of resources and thus conquered, and worst, defeated. Certainly we can go on rationalizing that things indeed will improve, but think again! We are no longer in the normally cyclical, periodically predictable, somewhat sustainable twentieth century.

The twentieth century as oppose to post twentieth century. Think of it in these terms. Comparatively it’s like regional versus universal, isolation vs conflagration, the fall of South Vietnam vs the collapse of the Soviet Union, family squabble vs citywide riots, snowmelt vs tsunami; in other words, localized damage and confined effect were pretty much the norm in the past century versus planetary domino effect as the ongoing dominant trend .

This time it is different due to the virtual world connectivity we all share and because of the externalized, seldom understood not to mention uncontrollable, frequent systemic and volatile global factors, compounded by our own stunning naiveté which seems to have no end in sight with our widely publicized infamous avarice as consumers and investors [post 2008 U.S. financial collapse] plus hubris & nonsense on the part of our unlimited supply of inept, career-oriented, polarized politicos. Blame the breakneck speed of universal & instant-gratification/disaster technology, but also consider the so-called QE1 & QE2 that’s been experimented by the U.S. central bank coupled with its ongoing negative cost of lending/borrowing that’s been implemented and hawked for a few years now, and still, the U.S. economy is in no better shape than it was several years ago. And globally, things seemingly are far from better if not predictably deteriotating with its potentially game changing debt crises brewing in the EU. Asian financial markets don’t have much to show for either. Things will not get better, so, what then?

On the languishing unemployment front, when will our political leaders be bold enough to admit that society [the government] in a capitalistic system cannot keep on raising taxes on the wealthy and the powerful because they are also known as investors, job creators and entrepreneurs. You tax them and they won’t spend, and without their spending and expanding there won’t be any hiring. It’s as basic as that! Surely we all understand the place and role of government with respect to the needy [to help...], but by the same token, if we no longer have a viable system because of irresponsible governance, who’s going to help them? And where will we be as a once great nation? But what about social democracy, you ask? …anyone? I didn’t think so. At least not yet… Conversely, it’s a no brainer to just leave alone the ballooning entitlements and just raise taxes to finance this unsustainable welfare system, but what then when, not if, the U.S. eventually becomes insolvent with the jobless rate at fifteen percent plus, which is sooner rather than later, and we as a great society can no longer remedy this sad state of affairs?

Go ahead and laugh… just hope and pray that you will indeed have the last laugh.

Too Late for Humanity

Human dignity rapidly being eroded, the unending massive job losses… the rising tide of relative insignificance of humans on the socio-economic front, masses outcry again and again for some equality…
Political leaders perpetual discord; widespread, rampant corruptions in all levels of government including the US.
A divisive president, youthful and unseasoned…
Another deep recession looming on the horizon in the US and unavoidable collapse of world markets…
The richest and most powerful country on earth increasing inability to self govern…
The quintessential democracy [so called] on the face of the planet with its mind boggling clueless, brainless leaders unabated…
The planet’s nonstop cataclysms, deadly extremism in religion, scandals that don’t have an end in sight in the world’s premier church.
Ongoing horrifying, unthinkable crimes against the most basic of human taboos… constantly popping up in the media.
The total collapse of human decency… all over the globe. In the US, educational values and learning priorities on our youths, parents and educators alike hopelessly influenced by material underpinnings and overshadowed by morally corrupt initiatives; whatever happened to the highly efficient time tested traditions and fundamentals of basic education- the 3Rs, play, family, in that order without the unnecessary, wasteful and overlapping bureaucracies and exhorbitant salaries for administration? What was wrong with the reasonably modest funding that has always worked in the mid-twentieth century when the dollar still had that noble intrinsic value? And now with widespread bankruptcies and government budgets oozing with red ink with no end in sight! Global famine, still charging and going strong in this technologically advanced, mega-wealthy twenty-first century…
Where the fundamental rules of human existence are casually obliterated on the cellular level and super scientists bastardizing innate molecular structures of living organisms in the name of commerce with humans increasingly clueless about traditional ethics… Those in the know say that world hunger is due to access, not food production.
Increasingly polarized human affairs amongst the various races, worldwide regional bloody conflicts without end… The nonstop political and social unrest throughout the globe. The breakneck high tech speed at which societies relate to one another around the world. The ultra-fast, mega-bucks mindset that permeates the corridors of high finance, influence and power with no regard whatsoever to basic human values.
Truly godless societies in spite of counter claim by the masses… especially in the West.
The proliferation of widespread worship of materialistic existence.
The ethical void in human lives with its wildly unbalanced aimless directions…
Moral, spiritual compass amongst modern societies gone awry… People are fine on the outside but dying on the inside.
Daily unbelievable, eye-popping greed and hubris amongst the super elites and the powerful citizens of the world… And now the planet’s natural resources on land and in the sea are getting depleted faster than the ongoing human population explosion. Pundits predict that the planet will have ten billion [now at six] humans in the foreseeable future. We are a society built on want, not needs…
Where the fundamentals of human perpetuation are brutalized and shamelessly advanced in the West… where the rulebook is literally trashed.

…now you still think that humans on this magnificent, magnanimous planet still stand a chance of continuity beyond this decade?
In other words, have we got a prayer??

A Special Letter to the President of the Philippines

                                                                                                                       1 June 2011

His Excellency, the President of the Philippines, the Honorable Benigno Aquino III

Dear Mr President,

Hello, Sir.
My name is H. “Ric” Andrada, a Filipino living and working overseas for many years, and I am now preparing to come back and reside in the coastal region of La Union. The reason why I’m writing to you, Sir, is about my contemplation of a paradigm shift in Philippine government policy that can vastly alter the job market in our favor, and that is changing the educational curriculum by reverting to English as the medium of instruction in the Philippines, the way it was when I was in elementary and high school. I fully understand and appreciate the contention of nationalism behind the current platform; however, with all due respect, Sir, it’s been seriously counterproductive. It actually undermines the approach to improving the lots of Filipino lives in this century because of globalization & worldwide competition. I am certain many in Congress if not the majority in certain demographics concur with this assessment even if they may not necessarily acknowledge it in public.

As you are perhaps aware, Sir, many Asian countries are beefing up their English language capability as well as their fluency by aggressively importing and hiring English teachers from the West. Using that as an analogy certainly will not sacrifice our national pride, instead, we as a society will be doing more to help our youths by giving them options; one such option would be the extensive availability of intensive classroom English. We do by the way have our own ample supply of capable English teachers to begin with plus we can always grow more of our own. By letting our citizens equip themselves with much improved English fluency would go a long ways in the world of commerce and employment not to mention scientific research. Its positive impact on competition for globalized jobs both domestic and foreign would be lasting in more ways than one amongst Filipinos. Choice of skills coupled with employment opportunities should be front & center in our national socio-economic agenda.

Frankly, what I’m advocating Sir is to enable many Filipinos to be truly bilingual, Pilipino and English, in ways similar to Belgium, So. Africa, Holland, Germany, Singapore, parts of US and Canada. And the only sure fire path to such a duality is through the educational platform. I myself speak and write Tagalog, Ilokano & English fluently. I’ll be happy to be of service to my motherland if called upon and help in any capacity given the opportunity. I have a good understanding of certain economic models including those of job creation initiatives. I’ve worked for several top corporate america firms in the US for many years and I consider myself a tireless, dedicated and focused troubleshooter. I also pride myself of having a comfortable grasp of both world politics & market driven economies. (I invite you to visit my web blog– www.trustinsource.com)

I have a keen insight into your ongoing goal in the Philippines to attract more off-shored jobs. The systematic spread of these jobs offering better wages throughout our great nation is indeed unprecedented, and it could not have come at a better time. We have amply demonstrated to our Asian neighbors our efficacy in surpassing India, formerly the top ranked, just recently by landing more outsourced jobs in the Philippines because we Filipinos can speak less accented English, better known in the industry as “accent neutral English”. Can you imagine, though, what would had been the more profound impact of conversational English on the citizenry had the government not reversed some forty years ago the classroom instructional modality? By the way, Sir, I have read most of your discourse, and they are quite impressive to say the least. I’ve seen your biography, Sir, and I do subscribe to the Press Office  online newsletter also known as  philippinesusa.org .

With all the luster reflected on your administration, Mr President, we should charge  ahead even more proactively. Let us plow deeper, wider with unwavering conviction on  the notion that a revitalized educational system is on our side. Let us re-evaluate our  countrywide classroom instructional objectives, Sir. Let us re-introduce English once  again as the viable instructional medium throughout the land; a major world language under our belt would only be a plus to everyone. Pilipino [Tagalog] is and will always be an integral part of the Philippine psyche no matter what. Let us convince our people that we are not really sacrificing anything in our national dignity and autonomy by us adopting a second national language; quite the contrary, it won’t be just an enhancement to our national pride and honor but it will also be an invaluable economic and scientific tool for many. With all due respect Sir the real challenge is for a proud  and deserving  people to find  ways to acquire better survival, marketable skills through innovation  especially for our younger generations tailored for the twenty-first century and beyond.  Pride through pragmatism rather than demagoguery should be the new mantra for our evolving and developing nation. Thank you for your time Mr President.

Respectfully,

-Henry “Ric” Andrada
